Blue Apron Is the Secret to Our Family’s Fall Routine
by Olivia B.
It’s that time of year again: the season is changing, the kids are headed back to school and a fall routine becomes a necessity for my busy family. I’ll admit, there’s always one hurdle we’ve faced when transitioning back to school...and that’s sharing a hearty family dinner on a regular basis, in between the soccer practices and piano lessons, weekend activities and study groups (not to mention our own full-time jobs).
I consider myself a decent home cook and am a firm believer in family meals, having grown up with a homemade dinner every night as a kid. But finding the time to recipe plan for the week, grocery shop for a family of four and then actually cook dinner after a long day at work can be tough. On top of that, there’s nothing worse than getting stuck in a dinner rut, either having no idea what to cook or scrambling to make something out of whatever we’ve got in our fridge and pantry.
Enter Blue Apron, the secret to our recent dinner success! I first heard of Blue Apron after seeing their TV commercial, and was initially really skeptical about becoming one of those families who used a meal kit delivery service. I just thought it looked too easy to be true and assumed it would be more expensive than buying groceries in bulk at a large supermarket. But when I really thought about grocery shopping at a store where you can (and are tempted to) buy anything and everything, I realized I was all too often over-shopping, buying food that either we didn’t need, or worse, that went unused. Figuring I had nothing to lose, I signed us up for the Family Plan: four dinners for four people, pre-planned, pre-measured and delivered right to my door in one week’s time.
As for the cost factor, Blue Apron’s Family Plan comes out to $8.74 a serving. That’s realistically right within our budget and totally worth it when I considered other factors like saving time by skipping the grocery store and reducing food waste. Plus, it’s invariably cheaper than takeout or going out to dinner.
By ordering Blue Apron, I knew that it would make cooking healthy, delicious dinners so much easier and fun. What I didn’t expect is how much my family would value it. Long gone are the days when it’s 5:30 pm and my kids are asking me “what’s for dinner.” Now, not only are they helping to decide what recipes we choose, they’re actually asking if they can help me cook dinner. Seeing my kids so giddy when our box arrives, excited about ingredients like specialty vegetables and udon noodles (things I never thought they’d even try until they were older) and actually helping out in the kitchen–who would have thought this would all be thanks to Blue Apron? We’re spending more time together as a family (and in the kitchen) than ever before, even with all of the extracurricular activities and busyness of the school year.
Sesame-Hoisin Salmon & Rice Bowls
Blue Apron has become an essential family activity in our daily routine. A couple of meals we’ve made together in the last month include a Shrimp, Potato & Corn “Boil,” Sesame-Hoisin Salmon & Rice Bowls and Chicken & Cherry Tomato Bolognese. Dishes like these were never on the menu at my house before, and now here we are, a family of chefs cooking together. I love that Blue Apron provides us with fresh, delicious dinners every week, but what’s even more rewarding is seeing my kids discover the joy of cooking, one family meal at a time. I don’t think you can put a price on that.
